The importance of continuous training

This year Graphix is focusing on upskilling ourselves and our team.

The importance of developing your team is not only to keep your business ideas fresh and up to date. But mainly to help your staff feel confident with what they are doing, and know that they are working on themselves, as well as for the business owner.

Helping our team to grow, and experience different things is part of our culture. The team feel connected and able to understand the highs and lows of each position, and where they fit in to making everyone’s time at work more enjoyable.

Each year during team appraisals we ask everyone what they would be interested in learning, and then we try and find a suitable training option out there.

What the team are learning this year:
Shane and Sharon have completed the Icehouse Business Owners Programme, which was 3 full days over three months, brought to Taranaki by Venture Taranaki.
In February Libby completed a 3-course Marketing Back to Basics Workshop Series, facilitated by Staples Rodway.
James is 6 months into his Signwriting Apprenticeship and doing extremely well.
Laura and Chris are about to launch into learning and implementing our new workflow system called Print IQ.
… and Jared has now been with us for a year. So, he’s been learning everything and doing a wonderful job.

Shane and I recently attended the Icehouse Business Owners Programme, brought to Taranaki for the first time by Venture Taranaki. A full 3-day course run over 3 months.
The list of comprehensive topics covered was hugely beneficial, even after 29 years in business. I felt that for some of the younger participants who were in their early years, this would hold them in good stead for the rest of their business lives.

A few of the topics covered were:

  • Purpose, Vision, Goal Setting, Competitive Advantage, Strategy, Leadership
  • People, Performance, Culture, Values, High-Performance Teams, Managing Conflict, Restructuring
  • Knowing Your Numbers, Margin v Mark-up, Sales & Marketing, Succession Planning, Action Planning

The workshop was engaging and interactive, and the facilitator was vastly experienced with owning businesses and coaching others. If you are looking to upskill yourself as a leader in business, I would highly recommend this course.
